Junior is truly living in two worlds and is a resident of none. Last Weebly, most of you asserted that stereotypes can be overcome by individuals; however, now we are seeing that, as hard as he is trying, Junior is unable to move past stereotypes. To the tribe, he is a traitor, and to Reardon he is an outsider. Why isn't Junior able to get past his race? What obstacles is he facing? If you were to give him advice for what he should do, what would you say?

He wants to have a better life and branch out into the world instead of the tribe should be happy that he is making a good name for the tribe

Junior isn't able to get past his race, because he probably feels trapped. Being a poor Indian isn't easy, and being as he is means that no matter what he does, or tries to do, he is still going to be a poor Indian. But, at least he is trying to find hope in his future by going to a school that has moor hope.

What would you tell him insofar as how to deal with his friends and family on the rez?

I would tell him that he should just have confidence in what he thinks about keeping hope and going to Reerdan School. He should still try to keep his family close, and keep trying to be friends with Rowdy because he needs that support in his life, but he will succeed in life as long as he keeps hope. And by going To Reerdan, that is him trying his hardest to keep hope, and succeed in life, even though that it may mean that he looses a lot of friendships back on the Rez.

The biggest obstacle that Junior is facing is himself. His self-confidence is extremely low because he is at an all white and he is an Indian, from the reservation. His self-confidence is starting to come up because he is now friends with Roger, he is dating Penelope, and he is a Freshman on the Varsity team. Once Junior is able to over come himself i think that everything will become very easy and very mellow.

At the same time, he'll never be accepted by her father, so it's not just himself that he needs to get over.

you never know that because he could buy the dad some nice chocolate and that could make him like Junior.

Even though he is considered a traitor at the reservation, he wasn't really anything there to begin with. Does he have any ties at the reservation that you think he's regretting?

I don't think that Reardan is seeing Junior as an outsider as much as they have been. He is starting to get recognized, he is getting rides home from upper classmen, he had a $40 dollar meal paid for, and he also made the varsity team as a freshman. At an all white school.

Don't you think Rowdy feels betrayed? I mean--Junior was Rowdy's only safe friend.

Of course Rowdy may feel betrayed, but Junior also asked Rowdy to go with him. He has made a few attempts to get Rowdy back in his life. The bigger question would be, is the type of thing to hold grudge over? True friends would be there for your support and Rowdy just isn't showing it. 10/6/2015 03:08:09 pm
I believe junior isn't able to get past his race because of all the already set in stereotypes. Without the stereotypes of Indians he could easily blend in with the other kids at Reardan and possibly even be accepted back into his own society at the reservation. The obstacles Junior face are all about him being an Indian going to a white school. If he was just any other kid transferring to Reardan, he'd be okay. Another big obstacle he faces is he is not as wealthy as the other kids at the school and his parents are alcoholics so he very often has to rely on the help of neighbors for rides and friends for money. If In were to give him any advice i'd tell him to just keep on doing what he's doing and to keep his head high, things are gonna get way better from here on out. He's already doing really good given his circumstances and all the racial stereotypes he's fighting.

junior feels lost because he really had nothing. the Indians hated him and the rerdend kids also didn't like him because he was native. but as the story continues you can see that he begins to make friends and and even gets a girl friend . i believe he is starting to mesh in with the new stereo type. my advice to junior would be to be him self and do his own thing dont try to please everyone eles

I personally think that one of the biggest obsticles hes facing is rowdy not excepting him anymore. In the book the only one that junior wants to be forgiven by is rowdy and not any of the other people on the reservation. The advice id give junior is to forget about others that want to bring you down. If people dont like him for the way he is theyre not friends and with his knowledge of res family he should know that you dont need to be like your family and stay on the res. Success may be found outside of where hes been raised.

InstructionsIt's really quite simple. Each week, I will post a question to the blog, and you will respond to it by commenting (100+ words). You will also gently question other students and respond to their questions to you. See the syllabus for more information about the expectations. I will give you examples of adequate responses in class. Archives
